KMD Developments Duchy Knock Out Cup Final
St Minver 0 Callington Town 1
Callington Town added the Duchy KO Cup to the Cornwall Junior Cup after a late winner in the final at Liskeard.
Premier Division St Minver started at a great pace pinning their Division One rivals back into defence. It was twenty minutes into the game before Callington gained a foothold but they then suffered a serious setback when their play-maker Kevin Pethick was forced off with a muscle injury. The rest of the half was evenly fought but with chances at a premium.
St Minver were once again fast out of the blocks at the start of the second period. They dominated against a now visibly tiring Callington side, both teams having come into the game on a very tiring schedule. St Minver struck the woodwork three times and Callington defended heroically. Perhaps St Minver knew it wasn't their day when after hitting the post twice in the same attack a goal bound shot was then superbly headed off the line.
This inspired Callington and they started to look dangerous on the break. In the 76th with the Callington attacker looking favourite for the ball he was clipped by St Minver goalkeeper Chris Andrews. Assistant referee Jack Borlase immediately signalled for a penalty. Kieran Prescott stepped up but his under hit shot was palmed away by Andrews to the right hand side of goal. Liam Bryant was quickest to respond and raced into the box to fire what proved the winner past Andrews. St Minver argued for encroachment but after referee Gary Cornish spoke to assistant Borlase the goal stood.
Callington went on to defend their lead without too much trouble. St Minver were the better side on the day but the chances missed by them proved critical.
Sponsor Will Kitto of KMD Developments presented the trophies with the John Cudlipp Memorial Trophy being presented to the Callington captain by John's widow Carol.
